In the absence of legislation, the Court laid down binding guidelines (the 'Vishaka Guidelines') to prevent and redress sexual harassment of women at the workplace, treating it as a violation of the fundamental rights to equality, life and the freedom to practise any profession. These guidelines were later codified in the POSH Act, 2013.
